The Book of Life is not a mystical register kept in the clouds. It is the physical membership record of the 12 tribes of New Spiritual Israel — the living community of those who have been harvested, sealed with the word of testimony, and registered as citizens of God's new kingdom on earth. Revelation refers to it as "the Lamb's Book of Life" because it records those who have come to the Lamb's community and been sealed with his covenant word. At the Great White Throne Judgment (Revelation 20:12–15), this is the decisive document: those whose names are found in it inherit eternal life; those whose names are not found in it face the second death.
What the Book of Life Is — and What It Is Not
Three things the Book of Life is not:
- Not a divine ledger kept for every person who professes faith in Jesus. Revelation 20:15 says those not written in it are thrown into the lake of fire — and this includes people who had religious lives but were not registered in the 12 tribes.
- Not permanent and unconditional. Revelation 3:5 says Jesus will not blot out the name of the overcomer "from the book of life" — implying that others can be blotted out. Psalm 69:28 confirms: "May they be blotted out of the book of life and not be listed with the righteous." A name can be removed.
- Not a future-only concern. The registration process is happening now — during the era of harvest and sealing, as the 12 tribes are being gathered.
What it is: the administrative record of those who completed the process of being born of God's seed (Matthew 13:24), being harvested (Revelation 14:14–16), being sealed (Revelation 7:1–8), and being registered as members of one of the 12 tribes of New Spiritual Israel (Revelation 7; 14). It is a present-day, living document — not a future heavenly event.
I will never blot out the name of that person from the book of life, but will acknowledge that name before my Father and his angels.
— Revelation 3:5 (NIV)
When a Name Is Written In — the Registration Process
Revelation's sequence of events describes exactly how a name enters the Book of Life. It is not a one-time declaration. It is a process:
| Step | What It Means | Scripture |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Born of God's seed | Receiving the true Word of testimony — being spiritually reborn through the living word of God's new covenant | Matthew 13:24; John 3:3–5 |
| 2. Harvested | Responding to the testimony and being gathered into God's kingdom — the harvest of souls described in Revelation 14 | Revelation 14:14–16; Matthew 13:39 |
| 3. Sealed | Receiving the revealed Word of the New Covenant — the testimony of fulfillment — engraved into the heart and mind | Revelation 7:1–8; Revelation 14:1–5 |
| 4. Belonging to one of the 12 tribes | Being registered as a member of New Spiritual Israel — one of the 12 specific tribes organized from Revelation 7 and 14 | Revelation 7; Revelation 14 |
| 5. Name written in the Book of Life | Formal registration — the administrative confirmation of belonging to the Lamb's community | Revelation 21:27; Revelation 3:5 |
The five steps through which a name is written in the Book of Life — each step corresponds to a specific event in the physical fulfillment of Revelation
The process does not happen in isolation. It happens in the community where the testimony of fulfillment is given — where the harvest, sealing, and registration are administered. This is why Revelation 22:17 gives the open invitation: "Let the one who is thirsty come; and let the one who wishes take the free gift of the water of life."
When a Name Can Be Blotted Out
Revelation 3:5 contains a conditional promise: Jesus will "never blot out" the overcomer's name. The implication is that names can be blotted out — and Psalm 69:28 confirms the principle has existed since the Old Testament: "May they be blotted out of the book of life and not be listed with the righteous."
A name is blotted out when a person betrays the covenant — when, having been sealed and registered, they return to the doctrines of the beast, receive the mark again, or forsake the community of testimony. The pattern repeats through Scripture: Israel's betrayal in the wilderness, the seven stars of Revelation 2–3 who turned away, and the churches that tolerated the Nicolaitans. Each case shows that membership in God's community is conditional on maintaining fidelity to the covenant word.
This is not a cause for fear for those who hold to the testimony. It is a warning to those who are tempted to return to Babylon after having come out of it.
May they be blotted out of the book of life and not be listed with the righteous.
— Psalm 69:28 (NIV)
The Book of Life at the Great White Throne Judgment
Revelation 20:11–15 describes the final use of the Book of Life — the Great White Throne Judgment at the end of the millennium:
And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books.
— Revelation 20:12 (NIV)
Two sets of books are opened:
- The 66 books of the Bible — the standard by which all deeds are judged. John 12:48 confirms: "the very words I have spoken will condemn them at the last day." Every person's deeds are measured against the entire testimony of Scripture.
- The Book of Life — the membership registry of the 12 tribes. This is the decisive document: "Anyone whose name was not found written in the book of life was thrown into the lake of fire" (Revelation 20:15).
Those who are in the Book of Life inherit the New Heaven and New Earth, the New Jerusalem, and eternal life with God. Those who are not — regardless of religious history, church affiliation, or the volume of their prayers — face the second death.
The connection between the 66 books of judgment and the Book of Life — and what it means practically to have your name written in it during this era — is what the live class teaches and facilitates as the concrete outcome of receiving the testimony.
The Book of Life Is Open Now
Revelation 22:17 gives the final invitation before the close of the book:
The Spirit and the bride say, 'Come!' And let the one who hears say, 'Come!' Let the one who is thirsty come; and let the one who wishes take the free gift of the water of life.
— Revelation 22:17 (NIV)
The registration is not closed. The Book of Life is still being written in. The 12 tribes are still gathering the Great Multitude in White. The invitation — "whoever is thirsty, come" — is the open door of Revelation 22:17, and it remains open as long as the era of harvest continues.
What it requires: coming to the place where the testimony is given, receiving the water of life, being sealed, and being registered. This is not a metaphor for general belief. It is the specific, lived process of belonging to New Spiritual Israel.
Knowing these is not enough. One must know the full prophecy of Revelation and its physical fulfillment: must be born of God's seed (Mt. 13:24), be harvested (Rv14:14-16), sealed (Rv7:1-8, Rv.14:1-5) with the prophecy and fulfillment, belong to one of the twelve tribes (Rv7, Rv14), and have one's name written in the book of life (Rv.21:27) to be called God's people.

Common Questions
What is the Book of Life in Revelation?
The Book of Life (specifically "the Lamb's Book of Life") is the physical membership record of the 12 tribes of New Spiritual Israel — the living community of those who have been harvested, sealed, and registered as citizens of God's new kingdom. It is not a mystical heavenly ledger for all who profess faith. It is a specific, present-day document recording those who completed the process of being born of God's seed, harvested, sealed, and registered in one of the 12 tribes. At the Great White Throne Judgment, those not found in it face the second death (Revelation 20:15).
How do you get your name written in the Book of Life?
Through five steps that correspond to the physical fulfillment of Revelation: being born of God's seed (receiving the true word), being harvested (coming to the community), being sealed (receiving the testimony of fulfillment), belonging to one of the 12 tribes (being registered in New Spiritual Israel), and having your name formally written in the Book of Life. This happens in the community where the testimony is given and the sealing is administered — not through a prayer prayed alone or a membership in any traditional church denomination.
Can a name be removed from the Book of Life?
Yes. Revelation 3:5 contains a conditional promise — Jesus will "never blot out" the overcomer's name — implying that names can be blotted out. Psalm 69:28 confirms: "May they be blotted out of the book of life." A name is blotted out when a person betrays the covenant: returning to the doctrines of the beast, receiving the mark again, or forsaking the community of testimony after having been sealed and registered. This is the same pattern as Israel's betrayal in the wilderness and the seven stars of Revelation 2–3 who turned away from their covenant.
What happens to people not in the Book of Life?
Revelation 20:15 states plainly: "Anyone whose name was not found written in the book of life was thrown into the lake of fire." The lake of fire is the second death — permanent separation from God. This applies to all spirits who were not in the first resurrection (Revelation 20:5–6), whose deeds are judged by the 66 books of the Bible and found to be outside the covenant. Religious history, church affiliation, and doctrinal knowledge are not the standard. The standard is the 66 books of Scripture and whether a name is in the Book of Life.
Is the Book of Life the same as the Lamb's Book of Life?
Yes. Revelation 21:27 calls it "the Lamb's book of life" — emphasizing that it records those who belong to the Lamb's community, the New Jerusalem, and have been sealed with the Lamb's covenant word (Revelation 14:1: the name of the Lamb and his Father written on the 144,000's foreheads). The "Lamb's" designation distinguishes it from any other kind of register: it is specifically the membership record of those who received and were sealed by the Lamb's testimony, not any alternative form of religious membership.
Is my name already in the Book of Life?
The honest answer is: only if you have completed the process. If you have been born of God's seed through the testimony of fulfillment, harvested, sealed, and registered as a member of one of the 12 tribes of New Spiritual Israel, your name is written. If you have not, Revelation 22:17 is the open invitation: "Whoever is thirsty, let them come." The Book of Life is still being written in during this era of harvest. The live class is the starting point for the process.
